"French Minister for Gaming Speaks out
Suggests that gaming should be seen as an artform, like cinema or music. O RLY?
by Bennett Ring, IGN AU
Australia, November 5, 2006 - The French Minister for Culture has spoken for the need for videogames to be recognised as a serious art form, in a recent interview published by the International Herald Tribute. Ronald Donnedieu de Vabres said that "People have looked down on video games for far too long, overlooking their great creativity and cultural value." He went one further, stating "Call me the he minister of video games if you want - I am proud of this."
If videogames were to receive the same recognition as other artforms, such as film making and music, it would receive extensive tax breaks in France. For example, French filmmakers received the equivalent of over AU$1 billion of support in 2004. Donnedieu de Vabres is pushing for game makers to receive a tax break of up 20 per cent, justifying this push by saying that games are "a form of artistic expression involving creation from script writers, designers and directors."
France houses three of the top ten game publishers in the world, with Ubisoft, Vivendi Games and Infogrames Entertainment based there. Another 100 game-related companies call France home, making the country a gaming leader in Europe.
However, in the same International Herald Tribute story, EA executive vice president for international publishing, Gerhard Florin, countered by claiming it could damage the state of French game development "Similar to what happened with the French film industry… French cinema's financial assistance supports only a few well-connected producers who no longer need to pay attention to consumers. "
