As you may have heard, the United Auto Workers Local 4123 representing the teaching associates, graduate assistants and undergraduate instructional student assistants has voted to strike on campuses starting Wednesday, December 10, 2008. This campus will remain open during any such job action. Student instruction and other student services will continue during any such activity. As a public institution the university is obligated to do so.
Students will be expected to continue to attend classes and other required university activities. The university will endeavor to determine that students are continuing to attend their scheduled classes and fulfill academic requirements. The university will continue to provide faculty for these events.
Students who live in residence halls will continue to have all usual services provided. It is anticipated that the Student Union, library, Student Services Center and other offices serving students will also remain open.
There may be picket lines at the entrance to the campus. You may cross this picket line to enter the campus if it is safe to do so. You may also choose an entrance that does not have a picket line. You are not obligated to provide the members of a picket line with your name or any other information.
If a member of the picket line harasses you, report this incident immediately to the University Police Department. Please visit the SJSU homepage at www.sjsu.edu for up- to-date information on the job action.
The university remains committed to providing its students with the highest quality educational experience. Your understanding, cooperation, and patience during this difficult period of time are greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
President Jon Whitmore
